This article is a report on a midden feature uncovered during construction of an underground parkade at Fort Garry Place. Salvage excavation of the feature yielded primarily faunal remains, nails, construction hardware, and ceramics. The midden is related to the Upper Fort Garry courthouse, gaol and hospital from ca.1844 to 1880. It was a significant find as the majority of structures within the fort were impacted between 1890-1950. There is also a discussion of the comparison with other Red River sites. Maps, historical photographs, excavation and artifact photographs are also included.

This study of tree-ring analysis (dendrochronology) determines the date of five log structures. A master tree-ring curve is used pertaining to oak tree samples. The rings can establish the cutting dates of the timbers, as well as the season they were felled. The wood samples determine dates of the logs used for the St. Boniface Museum (1845-1846), Seven Oaks House (1851), Upper Fort Garry (1846), Brown House (1855-1856) and St. Andrew’s Rectory (1853-1854). The sample from the Upper Fort Garry was taken from a privy pit (outhouse), used by the 6th Regiment of Foot. Tree ring charts are included.

A brief background of the site is provided, as well as details of the project, including what procedures would be followed should a burial be found.
