This article explains and describes how Red River settlement documents are used to link households through generations. The first section is A. Sources, and contains four subtitles: Hudson’s Bay Company Engagement Registers, Settlers’ Accounts, Parish Registers, and Geographical Location. The second section, entitled B. Linkage, looks at the structure of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s subfiles on land claims. The authors discuss the problems with these records (different spelling of names) and how to use these family linkages. There are maps and a few pages of parish registers, Manitoba census, and land registers.
