Archaeological Monitoring of the Construction Components of Festival Park at The Forks (2000)

Monitoring of three locations yielded a total of 1288 artifacts. Precontact artifacts (641) were recovered from 2-4 cultural horizons that are associated with earlier identified horizons dated to AD 1225-1285. Historic/Recent artifacts (647) are from the Railroad Period (1888-1989). Artifacts represent the following categories: lithics; architectural objects; lighting and manufacturing equipment; transportation; glass and ceramic ornamental and storage containers; dinnerware; communication; food processing; clothing; recreation; transportation; floral and faunal remains. Some beverage containers and dinnerware are dated (1904-1911) and detailed by manufacturer. Stratigraphy is discussed in detail.

Archaeological Monitoring of the Construction of the Manitoba Theatre for Young People at The Forks

Monitoring of auger holes and excavations yielded 28 artifacts from Precontact, Homestead and Industrial periods in the following categories: faunal remains; architectural objects; clothing; floral recoveries; soil; and containers. Historical context is briefly discussed for the following periods: First Inhabitants (8000 BC-AD 1737), including Archaic (3000 BC-AD 1) and Woodland (AD 1-1737); Contact (1737-1821), including Fort Gibraltar I (1810-1816); Transition (1821-1870); Industrialization and Immigration (1870-1888); and Railway (1888-1988). Stratigraphy is discussed in detail, providing information on flood activity at The Forks over the last 3000 years. Appendices include an artifact catalogue.

Archaeological Monitoring of the Stage I Construction Program

A total of 10,969 artifacts were recovered during monitoring of Stage I construction in the East Yard at The Forks site. Postcontact recoveries represent the following: architectural objects; lighting equipment; scientific artifacts; medicine; communication; food processing; clothing; transportation; recreation; housewares; containers; detritus; and floral and faunal remains. Precontact recoveries include lithics, ceramics, faunal and floral remains, sediment samples and radiocarbon samples. Stratigraphy and features are discussed in detail. Interpretation is discussed for the following periods: Railway (1888-1988); Industrial and Immigration (1870-1888); Contact and Transition (1737-1870); and Precontact (4000 BC-AD 1737). Appendices include locational data, artifact cataloguing hierarchy, photographic plates, and an artifact inventory catalogue (the latter contained in volume II).

Archaeological Monitoring of the Steam Plant Redevelopment

Auger drilling of pile holes to support new additions yielded two Precontact artifacts that could not be assigned to any specific cultural occupation. They are faunal remains (bison) and could not be associated with either human hunting activity or natural deposition. Stratigraphy is discussed, and appendices include an artifact catalogue.

Archaeological Monitoring of the York Avenue Underpass Reconstruction Project

Monitoring of mechanized excavation yielded Precontact artifacts (60) representing the periphery of encampments previously identified (correlated with a horizon that has been radiocarbon dated to 580±70 years ago) from the following categories: ceramic, lithic, and faunal remains. Industrial Period (1870-1888) and Railway (1888-1988) artifacts (146) were also recovered from the following categories: architectural objects; lighting and manufacturing equipment; clothing; housewares; faunal remains; ceramic and glass storage and ornamental containers; and dinnerware. Archaeology at The Forks: An Initial Assessment

This report outlines the research appraoch and field techniques, including auger drilling and backhoe trenching, of the inital Parks CAnada archaeological testing at The Forks site in 1984. Historic background is outlined in terms of previous archaeology and Precontact occupations. Findings at Forts Gibraltar I and II, as well as the remains of the railway, are disucssed. Accomplishments are summarised, and the potential is outlined. Appendices include layer/event descriptions for Forts Gibraltar I and II; results of soil testing; wood sample identification; radiocarbon dates; and artifacts from areas around Forts Gibraltar I and II. Assessment of Archaeological Resources Within the St. Mary Avenue Extension Right-of-Way

In continuation of a 1989 assessment, mechanized excavation of 9 trenches yielded 1533 artifacts. The Late Woodland Period (AD 500-1737), including the Blackduck tradition (AD 750-1000), Precontact artifacts represent the categories of lithics, ceramics, faunal remains, and a hearth feature. Historic artifacts represent the categories of: architectural objects (including structural); glass and ceramic containers; plastic debris; and faunal remains. These are identified with the Early Historic Period (1737-1888), including the Hudson’s Bay Experimental Farm (1836-1848). Stratigraphy is discussed in detail. Appendices include an artifact catalogue.

Monitoring of drilling yielded Precontact artifacts (2658) from lithic, ceramic, faunal and floral categories in three cultural horizons associated with dates of AD 1040 and AD 1285, and with the Aboriginal Peace Meeting 600 years ago. Historic artifacts (74) representing categories of: architectural objects; lighting equipment; communication; storage, ornamental and dinnerware containers; and floral and faunal remains. They are related to archival data from the early Immigration (1870-1888) and Railway (1888-1988) periods. Stratigraphy is discussed in detail, and stratigraphic profiles are included in appendices.
